How To Save On Your Telehandler Hire.

There is no doubt that when hiring any type of machinery, we all want to try and save some money along the way. The cheaper your expenses are, the more money you have back in your pocket. So how do you save on your telehandler hire? Is it as simple as just looking around to find the best price?

To help, we have written this exclusive honest blog on how you can reduce the cost of hiring a telehandler. Let’s get straight into it!

How much does it cost to hire a telehandler?

The overall cost of a telehandler hire varies depending on your supplier. Nevertheless, you can expect to pay around £280.00 +Vat per week for a 6m telehandler. This price only increases as you move up the scale to larger machines. To instantly save money before even agreeing to hire a telehandler, you need to know what machinery you need.

Choosing to hire machinery that is too large for your project can cause several issues.

  • An unnecessary added expense.
  • Too large machinery poses potential health and safety risks.
  • Too large machinery can damage the ground that you are working on.
  • Can slow your project down when awaiting a replacement machine.

Telehandlers are a twenty-first-century essential to the swift delivery of building, construction, agricultural and event projects. It is vital that before hiring a machine you speak to your plant hire specialist if you have any hesitation.

Ensure that you are aware of all the T&Cs of the telehandler hire service so you can effectively budget before taking out an agreement.

Factors that increase the cost of telehandler hire?

Telehandlers are a cost-efficient way to boost the productivity of a project. However, when it comes to choosing your supplier; there are some defining factors that can assist you in your decision-making:

Size

The overall size of a telehandler will generally indicate the overall cost. The bigger they are, generally the more expensive they are. This is due to the overall value of the machine and the return your potential hire service wishes to see. If you require a specific size of telehandler, it is always advised to contact your chosen provider in good time to secure your hire.

Power type

We are living in a constant revolutionary period of machinery, where newer technology is introduced almost every year. Some examples of recently introduced powers are electric and soon hydrogen-powered telehandlers. These alternative power options come at a premium rate. Unlike diesel-powered machinery, however, if you are required to use a specific telehandler for your project, you will need to factor a larger budget into your cost. Note that electric-powered telehandlers do require generators to charge, which would be charged at an additional fee.

Age

The age of the machinery can increase, or in some cases decrease the overall hire cost. New, low-hour machinery could cost slightly more compared to an older machine. (Supplier dependant). To reduce the risk of mechanical breakdown during your hire period, it is always best advised to opt for a supplier that offers new machinery at competitive prices. During you’re the procurement stage of telehandler hire, you can always investigate the age of the equipment.

If the price of the machinery seems too good to be true, then it is highly likely it is. This could be due to the available machines being tired and poorly maintained.

Support

Another factor that makes up the overall hire cost of a telehandler is the support that comes with the machine. Not every hire company will offer the same on-site support and thorough detailed service that others will. The level of support and maintenance is always reflected in the overall of the machine.

There is a huge benefit to understanding the support that you get when it comes to hiring any type of equipment. Dealing with a company that has a detailed and documented service and maintenance system will always pay you dividends.

Attachment charge

Telehandler attachments are not always charged. As standard, you will normally be asked what attachment you would like with the machine if you don’t specify. However, if you require multiple attachments during your hire period, you could expect to pay an additional fee.

This fee may only be a small charge compared to the overall cost of the telehandler, however, it is worth being aware of these fees. If in doubt, always speak to your supplier first and get an itemised quote before ordering.

Additional costs you must factor in with telehandler hire?

As we have covered all the factors that increase the cost of telehandler hire, it is now important to understand the additional costs that make up the overall total. This will help you understand the true cost of your hire. The three additional factors you need to be aware of are:

Delivery

Delivery costs of a telehandler are always priced separately. Due to their weight, they need to be transported by a qualified professional, hence why most customers who choose to hire a telehandler, have the machine delivered. This is normally based on a mileage basis.

To save cost on your delivery fees, using a local hire service to where you require the machinery is always a bonus. However, you should not shrug on the quality and support of machinery that arrives. If you like the quality of a particular supplier, then investigate where their nearest depot is. Reducing the distance will always reduce the cost of delivery.

Fuel

Another additional cost of hiring any type of machinery is fuel. No matter what type of powered engine the machine is, you need to be able to refill/recharge. If you are using a telehandler for a long period you will need to organise how you refill the machine correctly.

Fuel charges when off-hiring a telehandler can be avoided by returning the machine with its fuel tank full. Failure to do so will attract additional charges at the fuel rate your supplier charges. (Always request in advance).

Another way to save money on your telehandler hire is to avoid using the wrong fuel in your machine. A large number of telehandlers are diesel-powered. However, since the reform of red diesel from the construction industry, suppliers have had to resort to using alternative fuels. So, what does this mean for you? Not adhering to the correct fuel will incur damage costs. If you are uncertain at any point, always speak to your supplier.

Insurance

The final additional cost to telehandler hire is insurance. Before you arrange to hire a telehandler you need to arrange some type of insurance for while it is in your possession. This will cover operators for accidental damage, theft etc…

Not all business insurers will cover plant hire as part of their standard policy, therefore it is best to always check first. Never assume that you have cover as this could lead to serious finical repercussions if something is to go wrong.

Temporary hire insurance cost is determined by the value of the equipment and the duration you require the machine for. If you haven’t already organised temporary hire cover for your telehandler, click here to see what JCB finance has to offer. (Not affiliated).

Do you need a licence to hire a telehandler?

You do not need a licence to hire a telehandler from a plant hire supplier. However, to use the machine for anything outside personal use, you will. To remain compliant with government legislation, you will need to hold an NPORS telehandler operators’ licence. You will likely be asked to produce these documents before using them on any type of construction/building site.

Not all telehandlers are not registered as road legal, however, if you require to use one on a highway or road, you will need a legal machine and hold a full driver’s licence in addition to an operator’s licence.

If you are looking to obtain an NPORS operators licence in the UK, we recommend that you check out Vally Plant Training which offers on-site training for you and your team.
